First, IANAL (I Am Not A Lawyer).
I was recently asked to join a FREE web site, and of course, they had the obligatory “I Agree” with what their Terms Of Service for their site. As an author, I have become more aware that such FREE stuff really does not mean that it’s FREE, but that while there is no cost to me up front, there is FUTURE costs that I may be missing out on.
In this case, if I upload any content to this FREE site, here’s what the terms I have signed say:
For Site Content you, as an Author wish to submit, you agree to grant Learnopia Inc. a perpetual, irrevocable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer and sell such Site Content in any format either now known of or hereafter created, and to use the Author’s name and other identifying information provided in connection with that Site Content.
It boils down to who owns the copyright. As an author, you do. By agreeing to those terms they can sell whatever content I have loaded up on their site, forever!!
While you’re not signing away your life, you ARE signing away your future life.
And watch out for those that ask you to join THEIR group because they might have the same terms with your comments.
You might want to take a look at Creative Commons and Copyleft ideas and see what you can do about your ideas.
Check with a lawyer before taking any action on anything said here, it’s here to make you aware, then go see a copyright lawyer for advice.
