As any entrepreneur will tell you, and using a Mac, it’s about getting who you are out into the market among the rest of the businesses that you compete against. It’s also about connecting the dots when it comes to knowing your customer.

First. You have to have a product or service that you intend to sell to your ideal customer. This is a given, so I won’t belabor this point.

Second. You need social media to attract your customers to you. If you go to the Cool Infographics site you’ll find lots of sweet ways of showing information that you can learn from. But Willis Wee’s post about one graphic he described social media and how it is changing business communication. As an entrepreneur you need to address, as time and resources permit, to working some of these social media channels. But remember, the channel is NOT the customer, it is just that, a channel. What flows IN the channel is the communication between you and your customers and fans. It’s how you communicate with them.

So where do you start first? I enjoy Derek Sivers blog posts and when you watch his TED talk about How to start a movement he gives you some insights about your first customer. He says basically to  connect with them. Hint: It’s the people that are eager to connect with you in the first place, not necessarily those that you think you need to or are chasing. So be careful who you may casually dismiss. Why, because of the next item.

Third. You’re looking for your 1000 fans. The Long Tail is the number of customers as a young business have, and in the beginning very few. The chance they you’ll be another Britney Spears or Rolling Stones or a company like Apple is very slim, sort of the “Top Head” to the left of the of the graph versus the long tail to the right. Not that you can’t or could not get there, but the greater the success the greater the risk and efforts. Most are looking for the just the first sale, but by using the social media tools you can get your 1000 fans that will follow you on a regular basis. The 1000 fans are those that you will have the most influence with and those that will influence you and what you do. You need to be “the farmer” to them and take care of them like an organic farmer does to his land, keep them healthy with health interaction.

When it comes to entrepreneurs, what is needed first?

I Have A Dream

Once you have a dream, then it is important to:

I Have A Fan

It’s that simple.

After having read the book “Drive” by Dan Pink here’s more information that says that working smarter at your job, not longer hours, makes for a more productive worker. See the article “How to work less and do better.”

Now go do it and make more money.

As an entrepreneur and business start-up we all begin somewhere.

I am finishing up my first book and am in the editing stages now and I am starting to consider how my book will look to others, and in this case, how my fonts will look in the book’s interior. A readability issue. How does my text look to the reader.

I found a quick link to a quick article that as a novice to fonts it broke fonts down so even I can choose between a few choices. The article 19 top fonts in 19 top combinations is a first start for those that need to buy a clue from their local graphic artist. But better yet, I’m a better informed customer to a future graphic artist now.

Here’s his list with headline first and text being second and I have indicated which ones are default loaded on the Mac (bold is a Y/Y, italic has at least one loaded font, so you can figure out which extra ones you need to buy):

  1. Helvetica / Garamond   Y/Y
  2. Caslon / Univers  N/N
  3. Frutiger / Minion   N/N
  4. Futura / Bodoni   Y/Y
  5. Garamond / Futura   Y/Y
  6. Gill Sans / Caslon Y/N
  7. Minion / Gill Sans   N/Y
  8. Univers / Caslon   N/N
  9. Bodoni / Futura   Y/Y
  10. Myriad / Minion   N/N
  11. Avenir / Warnock   N/N
  12. Caslon / Franklin Gothic   N/N
  13. FF Din / Baskerville   N/Y
  14. Trade Gothic / Clarendon   N/N
  15. Baskerville / Univers Y/N
  16. Akzidenz Grotesk / Garamond   N/Y
  17. Clarendon / Trade Gothic   N/N
  18. Franklin Gothic / Baskerville   N/Y
  19. Warnock / Univers   N/N

As I was going over my book I actually chose #1 above without realizing it, but I see what he means now.

But the one thing that would be helpful is if Doug actually took his comment “I could have picked Baskerville, Caslon, Garamond, or Minion, etc. (all serif typefaces) to go with Futura (a sans serif typeface)” and for us newbies he could have expanded upon this some more. Note to Doug, we just don’t have the “eye” for this stuff! If you do add to this, I’ll put your name in my upcoming book as helping me out. :-)

Looking at my Snow Leopard fonts loaded on my Mac I see that I have 203 fonts in Font Book, where do we buy a clue how to use these?

Anyone with any different ideas or comments?

Here’s an interesting marketing chart of where people may be wanting to spend their marketing dollars for their company’s message. Social media seems to be taking the place of traditional media, so where does that leave you and your marketing? Will you be doing the same?

After reading “HELLO, my name is Scott’s” blog about his Customer Point of Interest (CPI) and using name tags to get discounted products I had another add on thought about his idea. While the clerk could have offered an immediate discount when you want to market to a number of  customers on a larger scale you could track the number of customers that take advantage of future discounts if you are sponsoring an event or have a joint venture.

As a sponsor or working a joint venture with another company use an event name tag to track the number of responders to your discounts from the event. For instance, if you helped sponsor an event and say for $1000 and there are 2000 attendees place in their brochures or marketing pieces the amount of discounts they’ll receive from your business if they bring in their name tag from the event, especially those of the seminar types that already have the event and their name on the tag itself.

By getting the number of attendees from the event holder and the number of customer that show up you automatically can figure out how much you made for your marketing.

In this blog post “Relentless – the difference between motion and action” is quoting that there is a difference between action and activity. What is the difference?

  • Activity = using your legs to march in place.
  • Action =  using your legs to push a stuck car to get it moving again.

So quit marching in place and get out of the car and push. Here’s some other ideas:

  • Activity = only talking about a problem
  • Action = discussing how to solve a problem

What is the difference between the two?

  • Activity = standing still
  • Action = moving forward

Always move forward.

Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing. Thomas Edison
