Mac Screen capturing and screencast software

August 26th, 2011 No comments

As an startup entrepreneur you always look to keep low or no costs to prolong using your capital. During a recent teleseminar I was introduced to Camtasia software. It is billed as the one stop shop for screen capturing and recording your audio all in the same application. But as I said above, entrepreneurs are always looking to save money, and time, and if you can, both money and time. So what is an entrepreneur to do without spending any money?

Well, here’s my answer.

August 17th, 2011 No comments

As with any new Mac owner who is a startup entrepreneur, learning how Macs do things differently than Windows can be a rough row to hoe. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be like grease lightening getting stuff done. Here is a list of questions a startup entrepreneur sent me who had figured it out, but had difficulty with transitioning to the Mac from Windows.

MobileMe, iCloud alternatives for video conferencing

IChat

The one thing that most Mac users are not aware of about Apple’s MobileMe (formerly .Mac services) is some of the capabilities to connect with others, such as using iChat to do Instant Messaging (IM), and audio and video chatting and recording. The technology was better than all others because it uses Apple’s technology. But as with anything, people are not aware of it’s capability and how it mostly works with Macs.

Apple has announced that it is improving things from MobileMe to iCloud. As Apple transitions from MobileMe to the iCloud you’ll see differences with your various Mac, iPhone, and iPad workflows as they are defined by Apple. There are NO indications about using iChat services in the iCloud, But in the mean time, you still have work to do and you can’t stop because of Apple’s changes, right?

So, what’s a Mac user to do when connecting with Windows users?

As a startup entrepreneur using a Mac you are always looking for steps to save time and reduce frustrations. Well here’s a tip that makes your various appointments easy to work with and helps in the long run if things get hectic.

When making an appointment in iCal if you are pasting the address and telephone number into the “Location” field in iCal, paste the same information into the Notes section of your iCal event. While you now have the same information in both places, they both do different things. Here’s what happens.

When you paste both the phone number (either the event location phone number or your contact’s phone number) and the address into the Notes section of your iCal event and you sync your Mac and iPhone up both pieces of information become finger clickable links in your iCal event.

How do I use this?

Mac OS X Lion released today

July 20th, 2011 No comments

If you’re a Mac user you’re bound to know that Apple release OS X Lion today. As with any new product launch, there are certain steps that you need to take before you rush out and upgrade. In order of preference, here’s what is essential.

  • Suggestion: download MacTracker software to see what the specs are for your Mac. It shows ALL of Apple’s hardware and additional information that is not found in System Profiler utility software. This is especially important when determining when Apple releases a new model, if per chance you buy it used.
  • What are the OS X system requirements: Mac OS X 10.6.6 (Snow Leopard). Lion will NOT allow you to load into anything less. See below.
  • Here’s the complete MacWorld Guide for installing Lion on your Mac, below are the specific links.

If you want the down and dirty, here’s The 5-minute Lion configuration for your Mac. For more details, read below.

Business use for iPhone Voice Memos

July 15th, 2011 2 comments

Any startup entrepreneur runs across periods of time where they can get some things done while waiting or they’re on the road. Texting can take a lot of time and sometimes the “fat finger” issue with typing makes matters worse. My wife is a realtor and she’s on the road a lot and “has time” and would like to answer her email on the road, but can’t text or type. Well, here’s a way around that: iPhone Voice Memo.

Wherever you are “on the road” in your car, at your local car mechanic getting your car worked on, or picking up your kids from school or the daycare center, you can use the Voice Memo app to record your thoughts for later retrieval and sharing with your customers, vendors, family members, or other contacts.
