Here’s a good link by Mari Smith “10 Ways to Stay Safe on Facebook” on how to keep your Facebook account clean from bad folks.  Too often new technology is great, but as with anything, so abuse it and get others to abuse it for malicious activity.

Keep safe.

Just heard about themoth.org web site, sounds interesting for sure. Needs a few moments to take a break, take a look at the web site. I’ll be checking it out later.

What is it? As the web site states “The Moth, a not-for-profit storytelling organization, was founded in New York in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green, who wanted to recreate in New York the feeling of sultry summer evenings on his native St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, where he and a small circle of friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales on his friend Wanda’s porch.”

Enjoy.

You know that entrepreneurs are busy people, they work hard and they work smart, but did you know that the Mac can work smart for you? You can automate any and all of what you do on your Mac to make yourself more productive.

Understand there are various levels of automating tasks on a Mac, from the simple to the complex and depending on the level of your needs will require more technical knowledge the more complex it gets. So how can you make your life easier? Here’s the ideas to make sure you get more done in less time:

  • Templates – creating templates of your regular and repeatable documents speeds up what you do by not having to recreate from scratch something that works for you. You can download a number of SCORE’s business templates from their web site, for example.
  • Automator – using Apple’s Automator you can make actionable tasks that the computer does to make various apps do things for you.
  • Applescript – with Apple’s scripting language you can control, and communicate among, applications, databases, networks, Web services, and even the operating system itself.
  • Scripting – for those understand the Mac’s UNIX heritage, are programmers, or are an expert at PHP, PERL, or Ruby On Rails you can write scripts to automate more detailed tasks. Normally this is used for larger amounts of data between databases and the like. Check with a programmer to see if you need this level of scripting. Not every business nail needs a hammer, a tack hammer or a sledge hammer may be needed depending on the task at hand.

So, there you have the basics of getting more productive on your Mac. The one thing that you need to know that you automate only those things that you repeat a lot such as something daily or that takes a lot of time and you have to do it over and over again. Automating things requires a few things before it is applicable to your task:

  • Repeatable –  your task should be something that you are constantly doing the same thing over and over, not something that is a one time thing, unless it is  a large project.
  • Frequent – the frequency of the task such as a number of times during the day
  • Accurate and consistent – you need accuracy in what you are doing.
  • Large project – a large project that needs to be accurate and fast, such as doing a monthly column or your finance books each month that covers a lot of data.
  • Fast – automating your typing ensure that it is done correctly and accurately each time you tell your Mac to do the task.

So, what do you need to automate?

Here’s the quote from the web site: “Now HCL’s CEO Vineet Nayar has gone on record with some controversial remarks about the quality of American technology college graduates. Tired of hearing stereotypes about Indian tech grads, Mr. Nayar, speaking before an audience of business partners in New York City, blasted American tech grads as ‘unemployable’.”

The article adds “He elaborated that he views American tech grads as inferior to those from India, China, and Brazil as the Americans only want to ‘get rich’ and dream up ‘the next big thing’.  He says students from countries like India, China, and Brazil are more willing to put the effort into ‘boring’ details of tech process and methodology, such as ITIL, Six Sigma, etc.”

As an entrepreneur you can do both, work the details and get rich, but to only “get rich” without doing the work you’ll only have our money taken away by smarter people.

Where is the problem? The “CEO of a major Indian corporation sounds off on what he sees as educational inadequacies” by the American system.

Here’s an interesting article by Seth Godin about Apple’s “tribes” of users. He also goes into how you tribe leader can help make the change that you see. As an entrepreneur and taking the effort in building your own business you could take this advice and apply it to you and your customers.

While Godin uses the word tribes in describing a group of people following a leader, it could also be used explaining the entrepreneur and growing a small business around his/her customers.

Take the interview and run with it and apply it to your business.

While the most common thought about becoming an entrepreneur is usually a younger person in their late teens or early twenties that has been bitten by the “go it alone” bug and wants to make their mark in the world, studies are showing that more than not it’s the older people that are starting small businesses than the younger generations.

When you read this article you’ll see that those in the ages of 55-64 have a higher incidence of starting businesses that other age groups.

Why? Because as one that is close to that age group you don’t want to be told by larger corporations or lousy bosses that “you’re not good enough” or “no longer needed” at that company.

But it goes to show that all of the excuses that larger companies give to fire, layoff, rightsize, or in some case wrongfully terminate older workers shows that these workers won’t put up with such flapdoodle (yes, there is a word, look it up).

So baby boomers, start hanging out your own shingle to become your own boss. The “too big to fail” is not a place I no longer want to work for, let me take the risk AND reward, not let some other person decide whether I’m a failure or not. Let it be between my customer and me, not a middleman.

Strike out and get rich, or at least to the level of income that’s right for you!!

One of the key factors in starting your own business is the level of involvement of any government in providing enough opportunity to get into, stay, and grow as a business. In order to get the basis for understanding governments involvement in business, we first need to understand the differing types of governments. Here’s a short video of the makeup of governments. The intent is to show where government is in the lives of it’s citizens.

So, based on the video, it’s the AMOUNT of government involved in the citizen’s daily lives that determines how much growth of income and wealth it’s citizens enjoy.

Bottom line: government is a consumer of it’s citizen’s wealth, not a producer of wealth!!

Less government, more wealth, more government, less wealth to go around. To see what various tax rates the US has used in the past refer to this link to see from 1913 to today’s rates on US citizens.

But in order to have a free and wealthy citizenry you need to have a strong moral code that everyone follows. Economics and government built on a strong moral foundation. If you do not have a strong moral foundation, they the economics and government fall and so does the country.

The less moral a country is, the more legal it gets to cover all of the problem immoral people create.

If you want to know how much government is involved in business, start one up and see how much paperwork you have to comply with. And, of the amount of paperwork that you have to comply with, how much does it take away from you trying to earn a living?

So, how much government is too much? Too little?

Did you know that the IRS tax code is now approaching over 70,000 pages!!!

Who is getting the special interest? Those that pay lobbyists. If we were to go to a Fairtax.org so that all taxes are collected the the POS (Point Of Sale) then no longer would we have to fill out forms for the IRS. That means you still pay your taxes, but you don’t spend as much time complying with all of the paperwork.

Something to think about.

If you are in business for yourself you will invariably come across customers and vendors like this video shows. Vendor/Client relationships go hand in hand with businesses. How do you or would you handle customers like these?

One of the keys to negotiation is how much time you have invested with each customer. Too often the “bottom half” of customers only look at prices of products and services and not the value. You have to determine at the get go whether you intend to be the “lowest price” company and forever lowering your price to get customers. But another way is to move in the other direction providing greater and greater value to  your customer to keep them coming back to you.

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful you will win some false friends and true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, some could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

So, Apple’s iPhone 3G S goes on sale across the nation and throughout the international community. Initial indications are that sales are brisk and should be in 300-500,000 units. Nice numbers.

Do you think these numbers will be better than the last two releases? Me personally, I think that both the lower priced  8GB 3G and the newer 3G S will keep sales moving along. The geeks will want to get the newer ones to satisfy their need to be first with the best, but most will want to get the 8GB older one as this provides enough of an iPhone experience but also keeps your costs down as only some of the newer features won’t be used by most people. Most do not have a need for it.

However, the underlying technology might spur development of newer apps so we should see a number of enhanced apps by winter, then you’ll see a greater number of purchases of the iPhone.

What do you think?
